Pete Steer & Geoff Pickney recently chatted with Ladyaslan about the tenek album, B side releases and Duran Duran to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame here is what they had to say~

LadyaslanDDTTRH: How did you come up with the name tenek? What does it mean?

tenek: The name was inspired by the outro vocal effect of a particular Heaven 17 track - 'Fascist Groove Thang'. We wanted a name that was non specific and concise. We've since found out that 'Tenek' is an indigenous tribe from Mexico and a planet in Star Wars as found on Wookieepedia! Hence why we like to spell it with a lower case’t’ :)

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Has Duran Duran inspired you and your music? In which areas have they influenced you both?

tenek: Yes, by the combination of guitars, synthesizers and vocal harmonies, which is an important part of the tenek sound?

LadyaslanDDTTRH: You once said tenek is anger, pop, frustration, electronics, bewilderment, and sheer determination, what made you come to that conclusion as a band?

tenek: They were not our words to be honest! But yes we identify with all those elements, which when fused together adds up to tenek :)

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What is your favorite Duran Duran song and video?

tenek: Both our favourite song is 'Ordinary World'. The song is a timeless classic and led to their resurgence in the 90's.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Tell us the genesis of the song Blinded By You and why was Synchronise left off the next album?

tenek: We were aiming for something danceable and commercial for the new album. It basically grew from the bass line groove; everything else was built around that. When we hit on the 'Heartbeat' hook we knew we were onto something! Synchronise was never intended for the album and was written specifically as an additional track for the single.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What contributions do you feel Duran Duran has made to the world of music and fashion?

tenek: As we said before, Duran Duran where pioneers of the MTV video revolution in the early 80's. Musically they were masters of the 'pop song' creating some of the very best of that era.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What was it like to have tenek songs remixed by Shaun Brooks who also worked with Gary Numan and Trent Reznor?

tenek: Shaun Brooks is the owner of the label Toffeetones and we've been working with him since signing to them in 2008. He understands exactly what tenek are about and is therefore the best person, we feel, to remix our songs.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What Duran Duran song would you like to remake if you could remake one?

tenek: Pete: 'Careless Memories'. Geoff: 'My Own Way'.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What is the "one" thing fans should know about tenek?

tenek: We're writing the music that we always wanted to and are being true to ourselves as a band. We're not trying to appeal to any specific trend or market; we just do what we do.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Can you tell us more about the new album “On the Wire?”

tenek: We feel that, 'On the Wire' is a step up for us as songwriters in comparison to our previous album, 'Stateless'. We're confident that we've written the best material that we possibly could within the last 18 months. We look forward to seeing how it is received, with the same excitement and apprehension that we're sure all musicians go through when completing an album!

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Will there be a video to accompany the first single "Blinded by You"

tenek: Some bands make the mistake of spending a lot of money on video's only to see them end up on YouTube with no real exposure. If the song's not there no video in the world is going to make it more interesting. We want to do videos in the future but right now at this stage of our career we're putting all our resources into touring and promoting our music at street level. Face to face with the fans. We feel a song like Blinded By You communicates directly to listeners because it's vibey and infectious and music is an audio medium first and foremost.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Tell us a little about the show on 21 August at The Albert in Brighton

tenek: It's basically a chance to showcase most of the songs from the new album in an intimate venue that we're familiar with. Those who are attending will get the chance to buy a copy of the album 2 weeks before its official release. Although we only have a limited amount available on the night.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: How has the reception been to the new album when playing it live?

tenek: On the recent German tour with De/Vision we found that our newer material seemed to be better received, this was very encouraging for us. 'Blinded By You' was particularly popular which vindicated the decision to release it as the first single from the album.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: What has been your craziest fan moment?

tenek: We've been given vegan muffins, home baked especially for us in Bochum - does that count?!

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Would tenek ever tour the United States?

tenek: Yes, we are particularly keen to play in the US at some point and we are working towards this becoming a reality.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Your new album On the Wire...was it a collaboration on the writing?

tenek: All tenek music and lyrics are co-written by both of us. We enjoy the creative spark from working in the studio together. The most exciting part being when a track starts to take shape into something special.

LadyaslanDDTTRH: Your fans are going to be reading this and hearing this...what do you want to tell them?
tenek: We really appreciate your support and we hope you will continue to join us on this exciting journey.
